Group O’Friends in Group Fitness Classes
Almost every local gym has group classes, so there is usually a variety.
The hardest part is going in and giving the class a try. It is infinitely more comfortable if you bring a fitness friend with you. Encourage each other to give it a try.
Going in, just know that you are going to make a commitment. Either agree to attend for the next 4 weeks or find another class.
The goal is not so much fitness as finding fitness friends.
Once you find that supportive and engaging class, you start to attend regularly, the benefits (beyond health) are plentiful.
Social & Health Benefits
- Workouts become fun
- A sense of being in it together
- Encouraging each other
- Increase attention span & willpower
- Healthier body perception
- And leave class in a better mood
And out of class, many have
- Engaged with others in meals or more exercise
- Felt they are part of a community
- With friends encouraging you to attend
- (And if you don’t will want to know why)
Guideline for finding classes that could be a great match
• If you crave simplicity, camaraderie, or prefer a natural ebb and flow to your exercise, try spin cycling, swimming, or yoga.
• If you are extroverted and love to be entertained while you sweat, try Zumba, Dance Fitness, music & movement classes.
• If you like weight lifting and pushing yourself to your limits, try Boot camp, kettlebell, or weight-based classes.
• If you are introverted and crave a quiet, meditative, yet effective workout, try yoga, tai chi, or pilates.
• If you are adventuresome, look to get outside of the 4 walls and “test” your fitness in life. We all know about 5Ks. Widen your outlook to include hiking/backpacking, rock climbing, or challenge courses (like Tough Mudder).
The world of fitness out there, go find yours.
